What files do we convert?
We have a large range of old family tree programs and a few
old computers so that we can retrieve family tree data from pretty well any
type of file or media you care to send us. We have an old windows 98 computer and
we can still read the old 3.5 inch floppy disks so it is very rare that we come
across a data file that we cannot open.
Alphabetical List of File Extensions Associated with
Family Tree Programs
We are still adding to this list so if you have a file from
a family tree program that ends with a different extension we are more than
likely to be able to open it.
.001 This could be an exported file from either
‘Softkey Family Tree’ or ‘Family Tree’ v1.5. The Softkey program
may have been distributed by GSP. These programs worked on windows 95 and 98.
This program will also export gedcom files. There is a series of files that
make a single database. These files are named Baptemes, Benedict, Communes,
Deces, Dossier, Fiches, Fichess, Marriages, Naiss, Professi, &
Sepultur and they all end 001 or 002 etc with one set of numbers being for
each file created.
.cgf This is the main data file created by ‘Corel
Family Tree’ or ‘Family Tree Creator’ (Mindscape)
.cft Cumberland Family Tree A CFT backup file is simply a copy of the CFT database with
the file extension changed from .CFT to .CFTBAK or .CFTBAK01 or
some other variation. Therefore the sure way to recover a backup is simply to
copy it to the location you want it. Then rename the file (using Windows
Explorer) to have an extension of .cft. Once you have renamed the file got to
the opening dialog of CFT, click the BROWSE button to locate and open the
database.
.cht This is a chart file created with a program
called Generations Family Tree
.fbc Family Tree Maker 2005/2006 (or
earlier)
.fbk Family Tree Maker 2005/2006 (or
earlier) backup file created automatically each time the program is closed.
.fdb This is the main data file created by Legacy
Family Tree
.fdb This is one of 5 data files created by Generations
Family Tree v4.2 or earlier (produced for Windows 3.1 – 98). Other files
required to complete the set of 5 are .ndb, ndx, .pdb, and .rcx
This program was also known as Reunion Family Tree for PC prior to being renamed 'Generations'.
.fdb This is one of 5 data files created by Europress
Family Tree (produced for Windows 3.1 – 98). Other files required to
complete the set of 5 are . .mft, .ndb, ndx and .pdb (there may also be a .pdx file)
.ftl This is the main data file created by Family
Tree Legends
.ftm This is the main data file created by Family
Tree Maker 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011 or later
.ftmb This is data backup file created by Family
Tree Maker 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011 or later
.ftw This is the main data file created by Family
Tree Maker 2006 or earlier
.gct Chart file created by Genbox
.gdb Main file created by Genbox
.ged This is a standard transfer file for
transferring data between two different applications.
.ged This is a standard transfer file used by Family
Historian as its main database file.
.gft This is the main data file created by GSP
Family Tree v1, 2, 3 or 4
.pjc This is the main project file of The
Master Genealogist
.rb1 This is a backup file created by Generations
Family Tree v1, 2, 3 or 4
.rmg This is the main data file created by Roots
Magic
.sqz This is a backup file for the project files
of The Master Genealogist or Ultimate Family Tree
.tps Data files named Books.tps,
Events.tps, Individ.tps, Photos.tps & Source.tps were created by Cumberland
Family Tree version 2.5. We haven’t done one of these yet (feb 2011)
.uds This is the main data file created with a
program called Generations Family Tree (Easytree) v5 onwards.
.zed This is the main data file created by My
Heritage (PC Version)
DOSSEXPT.00? This is an exported file from a Windows
95/98 program called ‘Softkey Family Tree possibly sold by GSP in the latter
part of the last century. Softkey will also export gedcom files. See notes
against extension .001 above.
